Learn Google Analytics 4 from YouTube in 7 days

Google Analytics 4 collects a lot and answers little until you decide what to ask it. Most people open the default reports, find them hard to read, and close the tab. This week is organized around questions instead: what do visitors do on my site, is it set up correctly, where does my traffic come from, which actions count as a success, and how do I build a report that shows exactly that. By Day 7 you have a working property and a few reports you can read.

Day 1 free. No credit card.

What you’ll have at the end

  • A GA4 property that receives data from your site or app.
  • Key events set up for the actions you care about.
  • A custom report that answers one real question.

Your 7-day program

One video a day, about 107 minutes of video in total, and one thing to make after each.

  1. 1

Day 1 — How do you set up GA4 from scratch?

A complete setup guide: account, property, data stream and installation. Set up a property for a site you control, install it, and confirm in the real-time report that your own visit appears. Today's video is a little over twenty-five minutes, so pause it after each step.

  2. 2

Day 2 — What are key events, and how do you set them up?

Key events are the actions that count as a success, such as a purchase or a sign-up. Choose two for your site, mark them as key events in GA4, and trigger each one yourself so you can see it counted.

  3. 3

Day 3 — How do you test that your tracking works?

A guide to DebugView, which shows events as they arrive. The video uses an Android app, so if you have a website, use the same idea there: trigger one event and confirm that you see it, then save a screenshot of the debug view.

  4. 4

Day 4 — What do visitors do step by step?

The lesson shows path exploration, which follows what people do before and after a page or an event. Open it on a property you have access to, pick one question such as what people do after the home page, and save a screenshot of the answer.

  5. 5

Day 5 — How do you build a custom report?

A short walkthrough of custom reports. Build one that answers a single question about your site, such as which pages bring the most conversions, and save it with a name you will understand later.

  6. 6

Day 6 — How do you track traffic from AI tools?

How to find visits that come from AI assistants and report on them. Create a report or a segment for that traffic, and note how many visits it shows over the last 28 days.

  7. 7

Day 7 — How do you track what people search for on your site?

A longer guide to site search tracking, with configuration, reporting and custom dimensions. If your site has a search box, set up the tracking and read the list of terms people used. If it does not, write down what you would learn if it did.

FAQ

Do I need a website to follow this week?

A site or an app you can edit makes it much easier, because most days ask you to look at your own data. A small personal site is enough.

Is this about Universal Analytics or GA4?

GA4 only. The videos use the current interface, and the vocabulary, such as key events, is the one GA4 uses today.

How long before data appears?

Real-time reports show your visit within a minute or so. Standard reports can take a day to fill, so some tasks use real-time or DebugView.

Do I need Google Tag Manager?

It appears in the setup video as one way to install the tag, but you can also add the tag directly. The week does not require learning Tag Manager in depth.

What do I submit as proof?

A screenshot or exported report from the day, such as the real-time view, your key events or your custom report.
